Important Considerations

Sizing a tank takes careful planning and much consideration.  When making tank decisions, you must consider the capacity, the product to be stored in the tank, and the soil conditions and environment of the location where the tank will be erected.

Many factors affect tank costs, and it should be noted that there is no rule-of-thumb for determining the most economic height-to-diameter ratio for tanks. To accommodate for increased capacity, tanks can be built taller, larger in diameter, or both. In general, as tanks increase in height, sheet thickness increases, resulting in higher material costs. In contrast, if a tank cover is required, it may prove to be more cost effective for a tank to be built taller, rather than wider.

Our tanks can be designed for future expansion by designing the footing, floor, and foundation sheets so they are strong enough to allow the tank walls to be heightened. Consideration for future tank expansion must be contemplated early, as pricing and design of the tank may be affected. When engineers know the owner wishes to have options, the bolted tank can be designed for future expansion in one of two ways:

The jacking method uses heavier foundation sheets so the tank can be jacked up and additional steel rings can be added to the bottom of the tank to expand it. This method is less expensive in the initial construction, but is more expensive to expand in the future. The heavier, more expensive sheets are added later in the process.

The stacking method is more expensive in the initial construction, but is less cost effective in later years when expansion is necessary. The lighter, less expensive sheets are added later in the process.

Many engineers and owners prefer bolted tanks to other tanks not only because they can be easily expanded, but also because they can be relocated or sold if the need for the tank no longer exists. The solid stainless steel sheets have excellent residual value. Because individual storage tank applications are unique and customer needs are varied, it is important that project engineers, owners, and managers consider various factors before preparing a final tank specification or placing an order for a new tank.

Engineers are encouraged to contact American Structures, Inc. to receive specific recommendations prior to specifying or ordering a tank for a particular application. As a manufacturer and erector, we have expertise with many types of tank projects. Our personnel can answer questions, make recommendations, and furnish specific, technical information.
