Digesters used in wastewater treatment are closed tanks. In solid waste conversion, digesters are units in which bacterial action is induced and accelerated in order to break down organic matter and establish the proper carbon to nitrogen ratio.
Aerobic digesters use oxygen to break down organic matter. Anaerobic digesters carry out the breakdown process without the presence of oxygen.
Digesters are used for aerobic treatment, a process by which microbes decompose complex organic compounds in the presence of oxygen and use the liberated energy for reproduction and growth. Such processes include extended aeration, trickling filtration, and rotating biological contactors.
